Gift ideas to smarten up your man on Valentine’s Day

You will never believe it, but 40% of my customers are females trying to spruce up the man in their life. I thought I would create a short list of gift ideas you could try for your man to jazz him up a little.

Tatty Shirts - the most common query I get asked is “My partner’s shirts are looking really tatty and I want to get him some new ones”. A man will wear a shirt his partner buys him 9 times out of 10 so you are onto a winner here.

Before you go shopping, go into his wardrobe, look at his current shirts and try to find out his collar size (inches or cm). Also try to find out which type of fit he prefers: Slim, Fitted etc. If you have the brand of a favourite shirt, that will also help. If you can, pinch it for the day and take it with you when you go shopping.

Now look for the shirts which are currently wearing on the collar or the cuffs. These are the ones needing to be replaced. Go wild… you have all the ammunition you need! Go to a few stores and take this info with you and any shop assistant will help you out.

To make the shirt gift a little romantic, add a little decoration to it. Maybe wrap it up nicely with a box of delicious chocolates or even some sexy underwear? You then have a personalized present that is practical in that he can use for work or going out, but which also has a personal touch.

Ties / Cufflinks – either of these is a great gift as they are a very personal choice and a nice touch. If you see some shirts in his wardrobe for which he doesn’t have ties or cufflinks, take them to a store and find a matching set. If you want to, you could even buy a Shirt/Tie/Cufflink set, so then you have the whole outfit all set out for him. To add a little more personal touch to the gift, you could add a picture of the two of you and wrap it altogether in a fancy gift box.

Those bits and bobs – when he comes home what does he do? Watch off, cufflinks off, tie off. Does it all get chucked in a corner somewhere or in a cupboard? Then when he needs them next he can never find them and who does he ask? You! A cufflink box or accessory box is a great storage idea. A tie rack is useful for when he comes home he can hang his tie up neatly and the creases will fall right out.

What to give someone you’ve been with for years – now there’s no reason to be slack just because you have been together for a while. On the contrary, you’ve a huge advantage as you know the person so well. Book something you can both do together – dinner, an outing, a show. Blokes may pretend they aren’t that bothered, but they like to be surprised as much as ladies do. Have a think and use the internet to do your research – there are loads of ideas out there.

What do give someone you’ve only been dating a very short while – even if you have only been with that person for a short while, you can still get them something. Just something small and not too expensive in case it makes them awkward…and you don’t want to scare them off. A book about something they are interested in, or a tie or cufflinks to match to something they already have would work…anything that looks like you have made an effort for them.

Q for you:

1. Do you want to match a shirt or tie but are not sure if the match works. Send me a picture on facebook.com/zantinimenswear and I will help you out

How to get lucky this Valentine’s Day

I wish I had the ideal answer to that question.  But what I do know is how you can increase your chances by looking good and getting organised.
Whether it’s a new love or an old love, or you just want to spoil the woman you love, I have 3 great tips to look good for that Valentine’s Day date.
Tip 1 – Decide on your venue well in advance.  Get on a few websites or even put a question out on Face Book and see if anyone recommends somewhere.  You want to impress her so do some research first.  Once you have your venue this will tell you what you should wear and more importantly, it will give your partner an idea of what to wear.  This is the first question she will ask, so make sure you are prepared.  If you make some effort to find out in advance what the dress code is, she will be very impressed. The extra effort taken will be noticed.
Tip 2 – Now to your outfit.  Smart casual is normally the attire for an evening out on Valentine’s Day.  If you do wear suits everyday for work, and want to wear a suit for your date, then try to pick a suit colour which is different from your work clothes.  Lighter shades of grey or blue look nice with a soft-coloured shirt.  If you do wear a suit, make sure your shirt isn’t too busy.  Let the suit do the talking.  If you are going to place where you want to wear jeans, you can smarten them up with a nice loud shirt and a suit jacket – a casual look which still looks very sharp.  It is better to be a little over dressed than be under dressed.
Tip 3 – Dot those I’s and cross those T’s!  On your date you want your lady to see that you have gone that extra mile.  Make sure you shave just before you go out or meet up.  The un-shaven look only looks good if you are in Hollywood.  Minimal cologne is the go…nothing too strong as you don’t want her drowned by the smell.  No light or white socks.  This may sound a bit obvious but you would be amazed at how many guys still wear these.  Make sure you wear black socks (without holes).  And shine those shoes!  If you have gone to all that effort with your clothes, please make sure your shoes are buffed and polished too.  Last but not least, skip the white jocks…absolutely no woman like them!

Money Saving Tips for your Clothes – Part 2

It’s January and you have credit card bills to pay. Also the economy is slowing down and your job maybe less secure than this time last year.
Everyone’s feeling the pinch and so I thought I’d share some money saving tips to help as we begin 2012.
  1. Use two trouser suits to prolong the life of your suit – When buying a suit, try and get two trousers and put a number 1 and 2 on the inside label.  You wear trousers 1 on one day and trousers 2 on another day. Ideally if you have two or three suits you can stretch this out, so your trousers don’t look worn and torn.  Additionally, follow tip 1 and put them on the shower door after a working day before putting them back in the wardrobe.
  2. Look after your ties – Ties are a very delicate silk fabric and need to really be looked after.  When you have finished with your tie for the day, flatten it out, then roll it up or hang it up on a tie rack.  Silk is a relaxed fabric and it will stretch out to its original shape.  Ties are not cheap especially the nice silk ones, so look after them
  3. Mix and match to create multiple outfits – It gets very expensive to have one tie for one shirt or one shirt and tie combo for just one suit.  So when you are buying your outfits take pictures of shirts and ties you have now.  Then you can make sure when you are buying new clothes that they go with your existing wardrobe.  If you get one tie that goes with two shirts, that is two outfits for the week, plus you then don’t need an extra tie for your 2nd shirt. Instant cost saving!
Q for you
1) Are you looking at replacing your wardrobe, and need help knowing where to start?
2) Do you have some outfits you are not sure go with what you already have?  Email me some pictures, I will be happy to help.

Money saving tips for your Clothes – Part 1

It’s January and you have credit card bills to pay. Also the economy is slowing down and your job maybe less secure than this time last year.
Everyone’s feeling the pinch and so I thought I’d share some money saving tips to help as we begin 2012.
  1. Save on dry cleaning bills – Many people will come back in the New Year and think it is a good time to dry clean work outfits.  This is not cheap, especially when you have several outfits to get dry cleaned at once.  If your clothes are not stained, then what you can do is hang them up on the back of the door when you are having a shower.  The steam will freshen up the outfit and give the fabric a whole new lease of life.  Plus it didn’t cost you a penny.
  2. Make your shirts last longer – I see many guys coming into my store and they have ruined their shirts by ironing the collar and cuffs.  This is the first place that shirts will look old and tattered.  The collars/cuffs are fused and they will keep their shape after washing so there is no need to iron them.  It will make your shirts last a lot longer.  If you have collar stays, remove them before washing, then give the collar a light press on low heat before putting the collar stays back in.
  3. Follow care label instructions – Please follow the care label instructions in your garment.  I have seen so many people ruin their clothes when they put their items in a washing machine when it says dry clean only.  Follow the instructions and your garments will last.  Remember they are an investment into your image at work, so look after them.

What should my son wear to his school formal?

Your son has mentioned his school formal is coming up, but he is growing at a rate of knots and you definitely want to keep the cost down.   Or you want to get him a nice suit so that he can wear it to weddings and interviews.

We recommend black as a great all-round suit, and perfect for a formal.  Nice and simple and then you can accessorize with the shirt, tie and lapel flower.

Normally these accessories tie in with what the girl is wearing, so make sure you prompt him to find out in advance.

As well as being a great colour for formals, black suits are perfect for interviews, weddings and funerals, so see it as a bit of an investment, not just a purchase for a one-off occasion.

Q for you

1) Have you bought your formal suit already, but aren’t sure how to match your partner?

2) Are you unsure on sizing and need some help?

Wedding suits…to Hire or to Buy?

Weddings can get very costly and I know from my own experience that as soon as the word ‘wedding’ is mentioned, the price of just about everything shoots up.

We know that there are flowers, photographers, food, drink etc to sort out, and therefore cost savings have to be made elsewhere.

So when wedding parties come and see us we are often asked whether we should hire or buy the grooms’ suits.  Well if the budget stretches to it, we recommend you buy, for the following reasons:

  • If the groom and his groomsmen wear suits for work they can always use the suits afterwards
  • You will have the new suits fitted specifically to your shape,  not just a general fit
  • You will look so much sharper on the day.  The bride will look amazing so why shouldn’t the groom also?
  • When hiring, you may not get a good quality suit
  • You don’t know who has worn the suit before you
  • You have to dry clean and insure the outfit – this is all an added cost, often neglected when comparing hire/buy prices

Q for you

  • What is your experience hiring or buying a suit for your own wedding?

Why it is important to dress well for Work

How do you look in the morning before you leave for work?  Do you plan your work wardrobe for the week?  Do you check the mirror before you head for the door?  In the world in which we live, despite being judged by our actions, I believe that we are still first and foremost judged by our appearance.
I was lucky enough to go and see Tiger Woods play at the Australian Golf Open over the weekend.  In my opinion he is one of the greatest golfers of our generation. As he arrived at the first tee I noted that Tiger was as impeccably dressed as ever. His golf speaks for itself, so why then does he need to dress so well?  That is his image.
As I have said before, we are always judged by our image and how we dress. I have a good friend of mine who wears a suit to work and looks really smart, but his tie is never done up properly and it’s always loose around the collar.  Does that look smart?  No!  I always pull him up on it as the image he is giving out is that he is a bit sloppy and doesn’t really care. He has made an effort to wear a suit, shirt and tie but has let himself down on one part, which then affects his whole image.
If you have been working in the same company for years and want to earn some respect, or want to grow within that company, you need to invest in your image.  Plan your work wardrobe, check how you look before you leave for work, and match that shirt and tie properly. I promise you that doing so will enhance your image at work
Q for you
1) Have you ever bought a new outfit and someone at work has noticed? How did it make you feel?
2) Do you plan your wardrobe for the following week?  If not, why not?
3) Do you think I am talking rubbish and in this age, image doesn’t matter at work?
